How do I contact the YMP team?

There is rarely a ‘typical working week’ for the Young Musicians Programme Team as activities run at weekends and during school holidays throughout the year; this means that the small team aren’t always in the office during the week. If participants have any queries regarding an upcoming activity they should email the team as far as possible in advance of the activity in order for the query to be dealt with efficiently. The Music Education Centre reception is usually staffed by the YMP team whilst activities are running at weekends.

Please note that the team communicates with all their participants and families by email.

Who are the YMP team?

The Young Musicians Programme Manager is Jack Healy. He is responsible for the overall management of the programme and works closely with a team of co-ordinators who run the day to day activity; the co-ordinators that YMP families are most likely to meet are:

  • Melissa Gillespie (Centre for Advanced Training, Foundation and Step Up Programmes, Jazz Attack and Folkworks Saturdays)
  • Rachael Purvis (Folkestra, Jambone, Quay Voices, Young Sinfonia)

For residential courses a pastoral care team is employed. Each team includes people experienced in this role; at least one member of the team is a trained first aider.

Child Protection

North Music Trust believes that all children and young people have the right to grow up in a safe and caring environment, which includes the right to protection from all types of abuse. They have a right to expect that adults in positions of responsibility do everything possible to uphold these rights. North Music Trust holds a detailed Child Protection Policy of which a full copy can be obtained by requesting a copy from

All Young Musicians Programme tutors and pastoral staff have a current CRB or DBS check. If parents or guardians have any concerns regarding the safety and welfare of a participant they should contact the YMP Manager.

Student Code of Conduct

The YMP team have some simple rules that help everyone to work together.

Withdrawing from Programmes

If a student considers withdrawing from any activity, we would like parents / guardians and the student to contact us at the earliest possible point so that we can discuss the options. In the case of most activity a full fee for the whole term must still be paid unless we receive six weeks’ notice before the start of the new term.

In the case of the Centre for Advanced Training there are further stipulations which can be found on the CAT information page.

Student Benefits

Every YMP participant is entitled to a discount in the café at Sage Gateshead, and can collect a card from the MEC reception which identifies them as a member. Students are also occasionally entitled to free or discounted concert tickets, both by Royal Northern Sinfonia and other visiting artists. For more information on benefits please see our benefits and bursaries page

Car Parking

The car park at Sage Gateshead is situated behind the building. YMP participants are eligible to apply for a plastic Car Park pass which allows them to park in Sage Gateshead car park for £2 per day. Participants / parents should go to Ticket Office to get a Car Park pass. Car Park Passes are £6.50; £1.50 pays for the card and £5 will be placed onto the card to use at the car park. You also receive one free exit when leaving the car park for the first time after obtaining your card.

Practice Room Bookings

Practice rooms can be booked during the week. Booking requests should be emailed to up to 2 weeks in advance, and no less than 3 working days before the date required. Please note that demand on MEC rooms is very high and we can only offer free use to students after Sage Gateshead’s programme has been fully accommodated.

There may be occasions when, even after you have been offered a room, it will be needed for another activity. In these circumstances students will be informed by Spaces Management who will do their best to find an alternative if possible. MEC rooms may not be used by tutors or students for private teaching.
